These papers begin early, with comments on Whitehouse at the General Theological Seminary, 1824. Mention of his health, character, and abilities occurs in minor correspondence of 1826-1847. More substantive materials relate to the period 1848-1875, and consist chiefly of correspondence with Bishops William Rollinson Whittingham and William Pinkney and the Reverend William E. Wyatt. Subjects include Whitehouse's role in the Sunday School Union; his election as Bishop Coadjutor of Illinois, 1851; his succession as Bishop, 1852; and reorganization of his diocese. He performs episcopal duties in Maryland, 1853, with reports on visitations to a number of churches. Letters of 1854-1860 deal with troubles in the Diocese of Illinois, the question of the Bishop's residence, the possibility of his resignation, and financial problems in founding the Cathedral of SS. Peter and Paul, Chicago. Civil War items include the pastoral letter to the Diocese of Illinois on the outbreak of war, 1861; church affairs there in 1864; and opposition to drafting clergymen for military service, 1865. He is active in the Freedmans' Commission, 1865. He reports on his travels, the Lambeth Conference of 1867, and conditions in the Church of England and the Russian Orthodox Church. Other subjects include the schism of Bishop George D. Cummins, 1868-1869; church work for Swedes in the Diocese of Illinois; opinion of the Lutherans; relations with the Churches of Sweden and Denmark; the Chicago fire, 1871; the trial of the Reverend George E. Cheney, 1871-1873; and the importance of the Cologne Conference of the Old Catholic Church, 1872. Tributes and other references to Whitehouse after his death, including six letters by his son, W. Fitzhugh Whitehouse, 1874-1875, concerning the election of a successor, the Bishop's views on ritualism and episcopal authority, and the candidacy of the Reverend George F. Seymour.
